Here are some guidelines in determining the right dado for your saw:
- In comparison to singular saw blades, dado sets are quite heavy. This means your saw's motor has to swing a lot more steel than it normally does. On some saws this can cause undue wear and tear to the machine. As a consequence, dados are usually sized one-two sizes smaller than the normal blade, unless the saw has a motor with excess power. Portable type table saws work best with 6" dado sets. Full size standing saws can use 8" sets. Industrial saws use the larger models. Specified another way, if your saw runs on 110/120 volts, choose the 6” blade set. If you have a 220/240 volt saw, the 8" set is best. 12” blade saws (1” arbor) can use a 10” dado set, and 14” and larger saws can accommodate a 12” dado set.
- Another consideration is slot size. For instance, some of the smaller 10" saws will not accommodate an 8" dado, so the 6" is best. In most cases, a new table insert will be required for dado use.
- Once you know the size blade set that fits your saw, Freud has several models to choose from:
- For economical, general purposes with excellent results in solid wood, plywood, and manmade materials choose the SD200 Series Pro Dado. This model includes shims for easy adjustment of the dado width.
- If you are primarily using the dado set for cutting hard and soft wood, the SD300 series Safety Dado is the best choice.
- The SD500 Series Super Dado produces the ultimate cuts in all wood products. This set includes shims and a bonus 3/32” chipper allowing the fastest setups for undersized plywood and oversized laminates.
